You often hear the expression, “It’s a marathon, not a sprint.”
When we’re talking about running a business, the difference is way more than that. Business requires you to excel in several unrelated activities. It’s more like a triathlon, which requires different skill and equipment to swim, bike, and then run…. but business has a lot more than three tasks. Once those first three are done, you keep on going!
When you’re done with that, you compete in a biathlon, which requires you to switch between highly stressful physical activity (skiing) and something that requires you to instantly calm your breathing and remain perfectly still (target shooting). After that, you head onto a basketball court and find that people are playing baseball there. What?!?! It all makes no sense in the moment, but that’s what running a business can be like.
Business success requires you to be good at a lot of different skills and switch between them at times that you really don’t want to.
It’s totally normal to be SUPER stressed about it.
That’s why it’s a good idea to surround yourself people who are great at those different skills so you can learn from them (or even better, hire them so you don’t need to switch between them as much).
